WOOD RELIEF PRINTS
These powerful prints capture the life story of these majestic creatures and their connection to all living things . Dion uses traditional Japanese methods to breath life back into these immortal giants and honour the lives they once lived .
After salvaging the long dead timbers they are sanded back perfectly smooth and gently chared with fire in the traditional, and ancient, Japanese technique called ‘Shou Sugi Ban 焼杉板’ (or Yakisugi), which preserves the wood. The process involves charring the wood with flame, cooling it with water, brushing it with horse hair and drying it with air. Ink is applied straight to the timber slab and the paper is draped directly over the top of the ink, a very delicate process. Using several different tools the growth rings are traced meticulously . Once the tracing process is finished the paper is lifted to reveal a life once lived.
Every tree is different as is the story it tells this particular print for instance is from a Moreton bay fig and its story is very interesting
Planted in the 1860s by Charles Moore , it graciously watched as a young country with an ancient culture become the country it is today . It gave shade to those that sat under it , shelter to those that slept under it and food to those that were hungry. It gave clothes to those that were cold, medicine to those that were ill. It even gave the ability to float on water to those that wanted to venture far. Children climbed it and swung from it , birds nested it and little puppies probably pissed on it. It lived a beautiful humble and long life. However ,it was recently cut down in its prime by the city council. Protesters showed up and chained their necks to its massive trunk showing their love and support
This giant cross cut section was to be ground into wood chips . As Sydney mourns the Moreton Bay fig trees recently cut down we must resolve to preserve the little we have left .
The majestic Moreton Bay fig or Australian banyan, is a large evergreen banyan tree of the family Moraceae . The same family of tree that, after attaining enlightenment, Buddha sat under for seven days, absorbed in his new-found realization.
In Hinduism, the leaf of the banyan tree is said to be the resting place for the god Krishna.
The god Shiva as Dakshinamurthy is nearly always depicted sitting in silence under the banyan with rishis at his feet.
Aboriginal people, the custodians of the very land that The Moreton Bay Fig Tree (Ficus macrophylla) is also a native used it in many aspects of their life. The figs were made into a paste or eaten when ripe and soft as a source of potassium, calcium, magnesium and iron.
The inner bark or roots were used to make sturdy cloth and cord for bags as well as woven fishing nets. The branches and the bark were used to make waterproof dug-out canoes. Lastly, the milky sap, which exudes when the tree is cut was prepared as a medicine to treat infections and to dress small wounds.
A banyan is a large tree which has many aerial roots growing down from the branches into the soil, forming prop roots. When the tree becomes older, the original trunk dies off, and the tree separates into sections, the props becoming separate trunks for the individual sections.
It is thought of as perfectly symbolizing eternal life due to its seemingly unending expansion.
The branches shoot out parallel to the ground in all directions, and the enormous canopy covers a distance of up to half a football field.”There was an old tree on Lord Howe Island that covered an area of over one hectare.”
Some Banyans have a canopy providing shade for entire villages.
It has the ability to survive and grow for centuries.
In Hindu mythology, the tree is called Kalpavriksha, the tree that provides fulfilment of wishes and other material gains.
It symbolizes Trimurti
The Banyan tree is mentioned in many scriptures as a tree of immortality.

KITCHEN ISLAND/Butchers Block
Merging modern design with ancient origins, this gorgeous butchers’ block is a rollaway kitchen island. Crafted from almost 30 lineal meters of solid walnut, it has been made in the traditional end grain method. End grain is far superior than long grain when it comes to chopping blocks and is preferred by all professional chefs and butchers. The surface basically heals itself, parting and closing with the knife as it slices through the grain—keeping your knives sharper longer.
The large rubber screws that hold the block on to the slatted stand can be easily adjusted to allow for movement in all directions. This is essential because timber moves and breathes and will literally change in shape from day to day with the difference in room and season temperature. This is how timber splits- when it can’t move.
The imported glue that binds the individual squares of timber together is water resistant and is the only wood glue that is FDA approved. The block is finished with a blend of natural waxes and food grade mineral oils, that make it smooth to the touch. These oils and waxes exceed FDA regulations for direct and indirect contact with food.
The leather is drum dyed, vegetable tanned, full grain Italian leather. It is hand cut and made with 20mm gauge cotton wound thread, embellished with antique brass Japanese rivets and finished with traditional saddlers’ beeswax leather conditioner. The rivets ensure that the stitching is kept intact when knives are taken in and out.

BAR STOOL/Ottoman
Sculpted by chainsaw, flame and water, this bar stool/bedside ottoman is crafted from the mighty Mountain Ash (Tasmanian Oak). Sourced on a private property in the Victorian highlands, its demise was natural. These majestic, native, trees had been standing dead for nearly ten years—a perfectly natural drying process—felled by Dion before going to ground to rot. They finished curing slowly in the studio for three years and then were cut to size, sculpted and shaped before being sanded perfectly smooth and finished with a clear matte coat. They look exactly as they did on the mountain, with colours ranging from a multitude of grey shades through a pastel rainbow . Some still bear the scars of the local wild Samba deer, rubbing their antlers against the trees.
The splits are natural and are accentuated by hardwood, bowtie inlays, that stop the split from moving. The bowties are burnt to match the legs and at just under 300mm wide and 720mm high, this bar stool is a beautifully artistic and functional feature of any home.

BOARD ROOM TABLE/Dining Table
Crafted from solid American White Oak, this table combines elegant, modern design with ancient techniques. The oak is 45mm thick with a large bevelled edge and domino jointed with breadboard ends, that have been doweled through the domino joints with elongated holes. This allows the perpendicular grains to move with the season, without causing friction or splitting. This time-consuming technique is difficult, but extremely effective, and though not often used in today’s furniture design due to mass production, it is the correct artisan method. It is three meters in length, 900mm wide at one end and 1900mm wide at the adjacent end. With round corners creating a quadrilateral or trapezoid shape, it is designed for two people to have an intimate dinner or meeting at the 900mm end, or to seat 15 people for dinner functions or board meetings. The unique shape ensures everyone is visible without having to lean in to see one another.
It has been finished in the traditional, and ancient, Japanese technique called ‘Shou Sugi Ban 焼杉板’ (or Yakisugi), which preserves wood by charring it. The process involves charring the wood with flame, cooling it with water, brushing it with horse hair, and finishing it with a water-based clear coat. The result is a jet-black, matte finish that accentuates the natural grain. Depending on the angle of the light, the charred wood can take on a silver to purple facade.
The base is industrial strength chrome and black powder-coated metal, inspired by Eames.

Some still bear the scars of the local wild Sambar deer, rubbing his antlers against the trees.
They are hand-painted with acrylic paint, sanded smooth and finished with a clear coat for protection and durability. The moss-covered logs are also available and will continue to live and thrive if you simply mist them with water.
